- What mandate does the current illegal regime have to even be thinking of changing the current arrangement for distributing lease money?
- Only if they realise that it is a highly emotive and sensitive issue best tackled under a properly mandated environment purely because it touches more than just the matter of equity among mataqali members.
- It is not surprising that issues such as status of chiefs/heads of mataqali and how they're regarded are among those being raised and these are far more than just ensuring equitable sharing of lease money. Most importantly also, such issues have greater significance for Fijians than others. In essence, it is the basis of who they are as people, and what makes them distinct.
- The PS, as a military imposition on the public service, despite being Fijian himself, would do well to remember this even though it will be a tough ask given the arrogance and illegality under which his regime misgoverns Fiji.

Callers to a Fijian talk-back show on FBC have expressed divided opinions on government’s proposal to share lease money equally among the people and not give a bigger share to chiefs which is the present practice.
Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office Colonel Pio Tikoduadua has been speaking on the issue this week on FBC’S influential Fijian-language stations Radio Fiji One and Bula FM.
Callers who were against the proposal expressed that chiefs should not be viewed the same as the people as they inherit and are given more responsibilities.
Opponents say the proposal to share lease money equally would downgrade chiefly titles.
However those who supported the proposal say the change was welcome and a long time coming – as many chiefs were not performing or serving their people well.
The Permanent Secretary will be on the talkback show again today on Radio Fiji One from 7 pm to 8 pm.
